Bulletin No. 4: Language, Mobility & Migration
The following bulletin is a highlight of
2001 Census data on Caledon’s population by Mother Tongue, Knowledge of
Official Language, Mobility and Migration as published by Statistics Canada on
December 10, 2002.
Language Composition of Caledon
According to the 2001 Census, 80% (40,285)
of respondents reported English as their mother tongue, compared to 82%
(32,495) in 1996. Respondents reporting French as their mother tongue remained
about 1%
An increasing number of respondents
reported a non-official language as their mother tongue. The 2001 Census
revealed that 18.3% (9,115) of respondents first spoke a language other than
English or French, up from 16.6% (6,540) in 1996.

The number of allophones increased by 40%
to 9,115 in 2001, representing a significant source of population growth.

Italian remained the leading non-official
language in Caledon followed by German and Portuguese. The 2001 Census showed
that the largest increase in population by mother tongue was Spanish at 207%,
followed by Croatian (180%) and Punjabi (100%).
The language composition of Caledon
included 44 different languages listed as mother tongue in the 2001 Census,
compared to 39 languages recorded in 1996. Caledon is becoming a more
multilingual Town.

Mobility Status
On December 10, 2002, Statistics Canada
also released the geographic mobility data on Caledon’s population; where they lived
in 1996 (Place of residence 5 years prior to the Census day, May 15, 2001).
