Bulletin No. 2: Population by Age and Gender

The following bulletin is a highlight of population data by Age and Gender in Caledon as published by Statistics Canada on July 16, 2002.

In 2001, Caledon had a total population of 50,595, an increase of 26.8% from 1996. Caledon ranked 3rd in population growth between 1996 and 2001 when compared to other municipalities in the Greater Toronto Area. The population of all age groups increased in Caledon between 1996 and 2001.

Median Age

Median age is the point where exactly one-half of the population is older and the other half is younger. The median age of Caledon’s population was 35.9 in 2001, an increase of 1.8 years from 1996. The median age for Ontario and Region of Peel in 2001 was 37.2 and 34.4 respectively.

Gender

The 2001 Census counted 25,280 (49.9%) men and 25,320 (50.1%) women in Caledon.

·        In 2001, the pre-school population aged 4 and under accounted for 7.2% (3,630) of Caledon’s total population.

·        The kindergarten and elementary school population aged 5 to 12 accounted for 12.6% (6,400) of Caledon’s total population in 2001.

·        The population in high schools, colleges and universities (aged 13-24) accounted for 15.3% (7,750) of Caledon’s total population in 2001.

·        The youth population aged 15 to 24 accounted for 12.2% (6,195) of Caledon’s total population in 2001.

·        Caledon’s working-age population aged 20 to 64 was 31,450 in 2001, which accounted for 62% of Caledon’s total population.

·        The younger working-age population aged 25 to 34 accounted for 13% (6,630) of Caledon’s total population in 2001.

·        The mid-career population aged 35 to 44 accounted for 19.3% (9,745) of Caledon’s total population in 2001.

·        The older working-age population aged 45 to 64 accounted for 25% (12,420) of Caledon’s total population in 2001.

·        The young retirees population aged 65 to 69 accounted for 2.9% (1,450) of Caledon’s total population in 2001.

·        The senior population aged 65 and over accounted for 7.9% (3,995) of Caledon’s total population in 2001.
