Tow Truck Licensing – Public Information
Tow
trucks that offer themselves for hire to the public within the Town of Caledon
are governed by Town
of Caledon By-law 2005-92. This by-law sets out requirements for the
equipment carried on these vehicles, the behaviour of drivers attending the
scene of an accident, and the rates drivers may charge for towing from a
collision. Tow Trucks licensed by the
Town of Caledon will have a Town of Caledon Licence sticker in the back window
of the truck and must have a current expiry date sticker.

A
Tow company may only charge the following fees and shall not charge any other
service fee except applicable federal and provincial taxes:
COLLISION TOW RATES
This
fee covers the cost that will be incurred to have your car towed from the
accident scene to a location of your choice. There should be no additional

the Town of Caledon.

A
collision tow rate:
|
(a) applies only when a

vehicle is towed as a result of a mechanical failure, an impairment of a
driver, a police seizure, a vehicle fire not involving a collision or other
similar cause

|
OTHER TOW RATES
A
maximum tow rate of $100.00 shall be charged where the tow of a vehicle is the
result of mechanical failure, an impairment of a driver, a police seizure, a
vehicle fire not involving a collision, or other similar cause.
In
all other circumstances, the owner and driver of a tow truck shall charge only
those fees in accordance with the schedule of rates filed with the Licensing
Officer.
Tow
truck drivers are licensed by the Town of Caledon, and are required to adhere
to the provisions as set out in the Town’s by-law. Some of the responsibilities
for tow truck drivers are:
- take proper care of the vehicle and
property entrusted to them for towing
- comply with the reasonable
instructions of the person hiring them
- behave in a courteous manner
- keep their vehicle clean and in good
repair
- present an itemized bill before
demanding payment
Before
towing your vehicle, the tow truck driver must fill out and have you sign a “Authorization
to Tow” form. This form does not commit the vehicle owner to having any work
done other than having the vehicle towed, and provides a written record as to
your intended destination.
