About Accessibility

Individuals with disabilities make up a significant and increasing portion
of our population. Statistics Canada claims about 1.5 million Ontarians
have a disability, which makes up about 13.5 per cent of the overall
population. This number is growing as it is estimated that in the next
two decades people with disabilities will make up about 20 per cent of
the population. In the Town of Caledon that may represent 10,000 residents

Landmark Legislation
On June 13, 2005 the Ontario Government introduced the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA).
Under the legislation, the provincial government will develop mandatory standards that aim to identify, remove and prevent barriers for people with disabilities. The purpose of the act is to make Ontario fully accessible by 2025.

Accessibility Standards
The Standards outlined in the Act aim to address the following five key areas:

●  Accessible Customer Service
●  Accessible Information and Communication
●  Accessible Employment
●  Accessible Built Environment
●  Accessible Transportation

Accessible Customer Service
The Customer Service Standard came into effect on January 1, 2008 and is now law. As a public sector organization, the Town was responsible for achieving compliance with the Standard by January 1, 2010. Click here to learn more about what Caledon has done to comply with this Standard.

Accessibility Advisory Committee
The Accessibility Advisory Committee is a committee of volunteers that advise Council on matters related to the identification, removal and prevention of barriers for persons with disabilities. As mandated by the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001 the Committee shall review site plans and advise Council on barriers to accessibility. Additionally, the Committee is to assist in the development and implementation of the Annual Accessibility Plan.
