First elected to municipal council in the fall of 2003 as the Area Councillor for Ward 2, Town of Caledon, Allan Thompson is now taking on the new role as his constituents’ representative at the regional council table.  He is excited to begin this new opportunity and commits to advocating strongly and effectively for his constituents and the Region of Peel partnership.

A lifelong resident of the Town of Caledon, Allan, and his wife, Anne, are raising their two children on his family farm, which has been in the family for four generations. In an era where “work where you live” is enjoying increased popularity, both Allan and Anne already subscribe to and practice that philosophy. Allan is a registered insurance broker with Caledon-based Mellow Insurance Limited of Bolton and Anne maintains a successful-home based journalism and communications business.

Active in his community, Allan is a Sunday School Teacher at Union Presbyterian Church and has served on various committees within the congregation.

Within the agricultural community, he is a past president of each the Peel Federation of Agriculture, the Peel Soil and Crop Improvement Association and the Halton-Peel Holstein Club. In 2002, he was the chairman of the Halton-Peel Hay West Committee, which saw the farmers and agribusiness communities of the Regions of Peel and Halton work together to donate 36 railway cars of hay. The hay was gathered and shipped from the Snelgrove shipping yards and made its way west to help the farmers in western Canada whose hay crops had been devastated by the prolonged drought.

He has served on numerous executives and committees throughout the Town of Caledon and the Region of Peel and prior to his election on council, he served as a member of the Greater Toronto Area agricultural committee studying land use issues.

Over the years Allan Thompson has received numerous accolades and recognitions for his community-minded dedication.

  • 2001: Region of Peel Farm Family of the Year: Presented jointly by the Caledon Chamber of Commerce and the Brampton Board of Trade in recognition of their collective accomplishments and contributions to both the community and their industry
  • 1991: Regional Nominee for the Ontario Outstanding Young Farmer program, a program committed to recognizing individuals who possess solid business sense in combination with a strong commitment to their community.
  • 1987-1989: Selected to participate in the provincial Advanced Agricultural Leadership Program, a two-year leadership development initiative. At the time of his selection, Thompson was recognized as the youngest person in Ontario to be selected to participate in the highly-acclaimed program.
  • 1984: Selected from amongst numerous representatives from across Canada to represent Canada at the World Congress for Young Farmers, held in Africa.

Born a farmer in 1945, Gord’s parents were dairy farmers in Peel Region and lived and worked the homestead that had been a family farm since 1836, which is eight generations.  His Father, Douglas and Mother Marion taught Gord his first very important lessons in life.  Be a good lad, work hard, and one day you will have your own farm.  Gord was educated at the one room school house called Alloa and went to Streetsville High School.  He was transferred to Streetsville as the schools in Brampton were full to capacity during that time.

As a young boy, Gord did not always listen and heed his parents advice as he had a mind of his own and developed his own style, although when he became older, he realized how important his parents advice was and applied what he learned and did eventually get to own and operate his own farm.  One of the very important lessons Gord’s parents taught him was to get a dollars’ worth of value for every dollar spent and also not to spend money you do not have.  This lesson became the most practical and valued advice that his parents could have taught him as it helped him in his business, the Community and now in government.  Gord moved to his present farm in Caledon in 2001.

Gord had the pleasure of meeting Josie in 1968 who then became his new bride in 1970.  Both Gord and Josie had 4 children, 3 boys, and 1 girl.  The two eldest boys, Wayne and Norman both have young families and are also farmers in Caledon.  The youngest son John is studying business at the University of Dowling in Long Island, NY, and is planning on continuing the family tradition of farming.  Daughter Karen has a position in purchasing with the government and is expecting her first child - Gord and Josie’s 7th new grandchild.

Farming has changed since Gord was originally taught by his dad.  Administration is one of the biggest jobs on the farm today and farming today, has grown into being big business and will continue to expand for many years to come.  Education relating to all aspects of farming is the key to a successful business.

Initially Gord worked on his parents dairy farm and continued dairy farming on his own, milking cows 7 days a week.  Since then, he has changed his type of farming to chicken farming and continues to work very hard to support his family and business.

Chickens are processed at a local packing plant that support our local economy and provide employment to the area.  You can see Gord’s produce at any of the local food centres in and around the Region, but you won’t know for sure, as there is no “McClure” label - not yet anyways!

Gord has always found time to serve his community and attends Home United Church for the past 20 years where he was an Elder, Trustee and Treasurer.  As a member of the Rotary Club for the past 8 years, he works diligently to help fundraise for various charities in the Caledon area.

Gord says he is not your typical Politician, although he is an elected official to Council for Ward 2.  He prefers to think of himself helping his neighbours, his friends, the ward residents, and property owners in the best way he can and tries to look after the business of the Town as he would the business of his own farm.
