Applications, Licences and Permits

The Town of Caledon issues a variety of licences and permits. Whether you are renovating your home, getting married or starting a new business there's a good chance you'll need a permit or licence from us. Here are a few that we offer. 

Building permits

You will need a building permit for most building, renovation and construction projects in Caledon. During the application process, we will review your building plans to ensure they meet all safety requirements and building code standards.

Burn permits

Whether you're having a recreational backyard fire or burning brush on your property, you need to apply for a burn permit. Find out which burn permit you need based on your property size and the type of fire.

Business licensing

Many types of businesses need a licence to operate in Caledon. Depending on the type of business you operate, you may need to apply for a business licence.

Development applications

You'll need to apply for a development application if you are subdividing your property or your development doesn't conform with the Town's zoning by-law or Official Plan

Fill permits

You will need a fill permit in most cases to place or remove any fill, alter the grade of a property or store or remove topsoil.

Liquor licences

Hosting an outdoor event with alcohol or looking to serve alcohol at your establishment? A Special Occasion Permit is required when alcohol is sold outside a licensed establishment like at weddings or community festivals and restaurants and bars need a Liquor Licence to serve alcohol. To apply, start by contacting the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario. You will also need to complete the Town’s process. 
Special Occasion Permit 

For outdoor events only, you need to notify the Town at least 30 days in advance of your event (60 days if attendance will exceed 5,000) as part of the AGCO application. You need to:

● Complete the Town’s Special Occasion Permit Form that you can request by e-mail

● Submit the form, including a site map showing where alcohol will be served, by e-mail

● Provide payment of the $159.14 fee ($212.18 for applications requiring Municipal Significance)

The Town will review your application and provide a response letter to you and the AGCO. You must notify the police and Peel Health separately.   

Municipal Significance

For public events hosted by any group other than a registered charity or not-for profit group, a designation of Municipal Significance must be provided through a resolution of Council or a letter from the Clerk. This will require additional processing time so please submit your application well in advance of your event.
Liquor Licence 

After starting your application with the AGCO you need to submit your Municipal Information Form, with Section 1 completed, and a detailed floorplan of your establishment, including outdoor areas if applicable, by e-mail to the Town.

Once Building and Fire inspections are finalized at your establishment a response letter and Agency Letters of Approval will be provided to you and the AGCO.

The fee for the Town process is $614.50 (inspections included).    

Lottery licences

The Town of Caledon has the authority to issue lottery licences to eligible organizations and groups within the community. If you are planning on running a game of chance where people pay to play for a prize then you will likely need a lottery licence.

Types of Lotteries

 Bazaar

To qualify for a raffle licence, your organization must have a proven charitable mandate. Your application must be completed by two members of your organization and returned to Service Caledon for review and approval. The fee for a raffle licence is three percent (3%) of the retail value of the prize including taxes.

Bingo 

To qualify for a bazaar lottery licence, your organization must have a proven charitable mandate. Your application must be completed by two members of your organization and returned to Service Caledon for review and approval. The fee for a bazaar licence is three per cent (3%) of the prize value up to a maximum of $500. Please note a bazaar means an event where any combination of the following lotteries may be conducted:

  • A raffle not exceeding $500 in prizes
  • A bingo not exceeding $500 in prizes
  • A maximum three wheels of fortune with a maximum $2 bet

Break-open (Nevada) 
 

To qualify for a break-open lottery licence, your organization must have a proven charitable mandate. Your application must be completed by two members and two principal officers of your organization and returned to Service Caledon for review and approval. The fee for a Break-open licence is three per cent (3%) of the prize board.

Marriage licences

Before you get married in Caledon, you'll need to apply for a marriage licence. Check to see if you're eligible for a marriage licence and review the application process and fees.

Road permits

Sign permits

To put up some permanent or temporary signs in the Town, you will need a sign permit. This includes election signs, real estate signs and others. 

Trees

To protect Caledon's greenspace, a permit is needed to cut trees in a woodlot or woodland.
