Background

Persons with disabilities make up a significant and increasing portion of our population. About 1.8 million Ontarians have a disability, which makes up about 15.5 percent of the overall population. In the Town, that may represent approximately 10,000 residents.

On June 13, 2005 the Ontario Government introduced the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA). Under the legislation, the provincial government has developed mandatory standards that aim to identify, remove and prevent barriers for people with disabilities. The purpose of the act is to make Ontario fully accessible by 2025.
